Dyn Media
FX Digital built the Dyn Connected TV app which launched in Germany, across Samsung Tizen, LG WebOS, Amazon Fire, Android TV, Apple TV, Sky and Magenta devices.
Developing the ultimate ‘home of sports’, offering a seamless, high-quality app experience and broad accessibility across Smart TVs and set-top box devices.
Dyn has embarked on an ambitious mission to redefine sports consumption in Germany. To achieve this vision, Dyn has partnered with FX Digital to build a cutting-edge streaming platform focusing on handball, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and more. By leveraging rights previously held by Magenta Telecom and Sky, Dyn Media set out to provide a dedicated space for these sports communities in the DACH region.
Supporting grassroots sports
Dyn allows users to direct a portion of their subscription fee to grassroots projects in their chosen sport, adding a philanthropic angle to the platform.
Launching a new era of sports streaming
Key to the project was developing a specialised TV App that integrates smoothly with mobile apps and supports specific devices, aiming for a unified and accessible user experience. FX Digital played a crucial role, using their expertise in TV App development to address device compatibility challenges and create a user-friendly interface.
The project culminated in the App’s successful launch in August 2023. The Dyn App debuted on Sky Q, Android, Samsung, Sony, and Magenta devices. By year-end, it expanded to Philips, Panasonic Android devices, and Fire TV, with plans to introduce it on LG devices. This expansion reflects Dyn’s commitment to accessibility and innovation.
Balancing App Quality with Speed to Market
Developing Dyn’s Connected TV App presented many of the typical Connected TV challenges, including the need to ensure smooth user experience across various platforms and devices. This was even more important with Dyn targeting Sky and Magenta lower-end set top box devices. To add to this, the nature of the sports market meant we had a fixed launch date in order to meet the season’s opening games.
To overcome these challenges we used decided upon a single codebase approach, utilising the LightningJS framework. This approach helped ensure quicker time to market and a consistent user experience across all devices. For those that are not familiar with LightningJS, it uses a technology called WebGL which is essentially a way to use the GPU to draw elements on the screen. By leveraging the GPU on the devices, the framework lets you focus on the user experience. This is particularly important on the performance constrained set-top boxes.
Collaborative success
The project’s success was due to the collaboration between FX Digital, Deltatre, and third-party providers. Deltatre provided their Axis product as a robust content management platform. This synergy allowed for smooth integration of different technologies, across major platforms including Sky and Magenta. Our partnership also supported the app’s presence on popular devices like Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG WebOS and Android TV to significantly broadened the user reach.
We also integrated Spicy Mango’s Game Day platform as a proof of concept to showcase the possibilities of enhancing user experience with an interactive video player.
The Dyn project stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative technology and strategic collaboration. Setting a new standard for sports streaming.
As the App continues to expand and evolve, the future holds exciting possibilities for further enhancements and broader reach. For customers, partnering with FX Digital could mean pioneering new frontiers in sports streaming, delivering unparalleled experiences to fans worldwide, and staying at the cutting edge of digital innovation.
With FX Digital’s proven expertise and forward-thinking approach, the possibilities are endless.
